Hands Down These Will Become Your Favorite DIY Knitted Mittens

With winter setting in soon, you’ve got to start thinking about your cold weather accessories. These DIY knitted mittens make for happy hands. The peek-a-boo fingers design removes the most frustrating thing about mittens—the inability to have normal dexterity. The bold red color will give your outerwear an eye-catching pop. Instructions to Make DIY Knit Mittens

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials

2 - 50g skein of DMC Woolly (136 yds/skein), color 052 Red
One set of US 3 (3.25 mm) double pointed needles D/3 (3.25 mm) crochet hook

Two decorative buttons in a contrasting color Yarn needle

Abbreviations

K – Knit
P – Purl
St/s – Stitch/es
Rnd/s – Round/s
N – Needle
M1L – Make one left. Insert the left needle under strand between the two needles from front to back, lifting the strand on to the left needle. Knit this new strand through the back loop, creating a new stitch. SKP – Slip one stitch knitwise, knit the next stitch, and pass the slipped stitch over. K2tog – Knit two stitches together

Stitch Pattern Used
Rnds 1 - 3: Knit all sts.
Rnd 4: (K1, P1) repeat to end of the round.

Mitten Instructions (Make two)
Cast on 48 stitches. Divide evenly over 4 needles – 12 sts on each needle.
Join in the round being careful not to twist the stitches.

Ribbing
Rnds 1 – 15: (K2, P2) and repeat to end of the round.

Wrist
Rnds 16 – 18: Knit all sts.
Rnd 19: (K1, P1) and repeat to end of the round. Rnds 20 - 27: Repeat Rnds 16 - 19 twice more.

Thumb Gusset
Rnd28: N1:K1,M1L,Ktoendofneedle.N2&3:K all sts. N4: K until one st remains, M1L, K1.
Rnd 29: Knit all sts.
Rnd30: N1:K2,M1L,Ktoendofneedle.N2&3:K all sts. N4: K until 2 sts remain, M1L, K2.
Rnd 31: (K1, P1) and repeat to end of each round.

Rnd32: N1:K3,M1L,Ktoendofneedle.N2&3:K all sts. N4: K until 3 sts remain, M1L, K3.
Rnd 33: Knit all sts.
Rnd34: N1:K4,M1L,Ktoendofneedle.N2&3:K all sts. N4: K until 4 sts remain, M1L, K4.

Rnd 35: (K1, P1) and repeat to end of the round.

Rnd36: N1:K5,M1L,Ktoendofneedle.N2&3:K all sts. N4: K until 5 sts remain, M1L, K5.
Rnd 37: Knit all sts.
Rnd38: N1:K6,M1L,Ktoendofneedle.N2&3:K all sts. N4: K until 6 sts remain, M1L, K6.

Rnd 39: (K1, P1) and repeat to end of each round.

Rnd40: N1:K7,M1L,Ktoendofneedle.N2&3:K all sts. N4: K until 7 sts remain, M1L, K7.
Rnd 41: Knit all sts.
Rnd42: N1:K8,M1L,Ktoendofneedle.N2&3:K all sts. N4: K until 8 sts remain, M1L, K8.

Rnd 43: (K1, P1) and repeat to end of each round.

Place the 16 thumb gusset sts on a holder or scrap yarn to work later.

Hand
Continue on the 48 remaining sts, closing the gap at the gusset on the first round.
Rnds 1 – 3: Knit all sts.
Rnd 4: (K1, P1) and repeat to end of the round.

Rnds 5 – 12: Repeat Rnds 1 – 4 twice more.

Working 24 sts back and forth on Needles 1 and 2 ONLY
Rows 12 – 17: (K2, P2) flat across each row.
Bind off these 24 sts ONLY.

(Note: On second mitten, work ribbing flat on Needles 3 and 4 ONLY.)

Cast on 24 sts onto Needles 1 and 2. (Needles 3 and 4 on the second mitten.)
Knit 6 rows of (K2, P2) rib stitch flat.

Now begin to work in the round again, working across all 4 needles as follows:
Rnd1–3: Knit all sts.
Rnd 4: (K1, P1) and repeat to end of the round.

Rnds 5 - 12: Repeat Rnds 1 - 4 twice more.

Begin decreasing while maintaining the established 4 row stitch pattern:
Rnd1: N1 - K1, k2tog, K to end of needle. N2 - K until 3 sts remain, SKP, K1.
N3 – Repeat N1. N3 – Repeat N2.
Decrease until 1 st remains on each needle.
Cut yarn and thread through the 4 live sts. Secure and weave in end.

Thumb
Slip the 16 sts held on the holder onto 3 needles.

Pick up an additional 2 sts where the hand meets the thumb to close the hole.
Reposition these 18 sts evenly – 6 sts on each needle.

Rnd1–3: Knit all sts.
Rnd 4: (K1, P1) and repeat to end of the round.

Rnds 5 - 12: Repeat Rnds 1 - 4 twice more.

Begin decreasing. K2tog at the beginning of each needle until 1 st remains on each needle.
Cut yarn and thread through the 3 live sts. Secure and weave in end.

Finishing Weave in ends.
